New works by Filippo Minelli
Italian artist Filippo Minelli was commissioned by Storyline Studios, Norway’s largest movie firm, to create four photos of his Silence/Shapes series for their new ID. Recently, the whole identity-renewal created by Workinprogress received gold at the Norwegian Design Awards and silver at the European Design Awards 2013.
In 2009, Minelli started taking photos of smoke-bombs in romantic landscapes to juxtapose the beauty of nature with the violence of a medium devoted to create chaos bringing about a stunning result. These powerful images, taken in various areas around Europe, have been shown in art exhibitions, publications and were featured on many art and design-related websites.
Silence/Shapes has also been shown at Venice Biennale 2011 and was on the cover of the prestigious art-magazine Elephant in early 2013.
Short bio of Filippo Minelli
Filippo Minelli (b. 1983) is a contemporary artist from Italy who works within a variety of media, such as interventions in public space, as well as photographs and painting. He received his BFA in Arts and New Media and graduated with honors from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, Italy.
His work was shown at international Photography festivals from Rome to Singapore to Paraty (BR), at Venice Biennale 2011 and published in the New York Times, le Monde, and Sueddeutsche Zeitung.
From Europe to South East Asia, the Mongolian steppe to African deserts, passing by the green line between Palestine and Israel, Minelli has created public art nearly everywhere. His artistic path, through the use of language, led him to investigate the importance of the word in contemporaneity, as well as its opposite, silence, visualized through photography in the public performances of his ‘Silence/Shapes’ series.
Earlier this year, philosopher Santiago Zabala wrote an article about Minelli’s work which was published in The New York Times. Also, an overview of his works for his first monograph will be published by Onomatopee Foundation in late 2013.
