Mural art is any work of art that the artist applies to a ceiling or wall, usually in a public space. Mural art can either be done on canvas and applied on the wall or painted directly onto the surface of a permanent substrate (aka the wall).
Most mural artists use a fresco painting technique, while others paint on surfaces using aerosol cans, airbrushes, rollers, or painter’s brushes. Other common materials used to create murals include acrylic paint, oil paint, and tempera. Today, murals form a vital part of urban art with iconic work from world-renowned artists like Os Gemeos, Shepard Fairey, and Keith Haring.
