Born Cynthia Morris Sherman on January 19, 1954, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Cindy Sherman is an American artist highly regarded as an important figure in the so-called Pictures Generation. Her works chiefly comprise self-portrait photographs showcasing herself in a variety of contexts.
Sherman started with surrealist painting before switching to photography in the late 1970s. Her works often explore a raft of cultural constructions associated with female gender roles. With her artworks, she seeks to highlight the widespread and often adverse influence of mass media over collective and individual identities.
