War photography is exactly what it sounds like – a photography style involving the documentation of armed conflicts (aka wars) through photographs. It also involves photographing the effects of war on places, cultures, and people.
The first known war photographer was a Bengal army surgeon by the name of John McCosh. He took a raft of photographs of the Second Anglo-Sikh War (1848-1849) and the Second Anglo-Burmese War (1852–53). Other well-known war photographers include Roger Fenton, Gerda Taro, James Nachtwey, Nick Ut, and Margaret Bourke-White.
