Born in 1960 in Padua, Italy, Maurizio Cattelan is an Italian conceptual artist extraordinaire. He established himself as an artist by courting controversy through provocative, playful, and emotive conceptual practices that challenge established and contemporary societal norms.
His famous works include Comedian (2019), featuring just a banana mounted to a wall with duct tape; Him (2001), an effigy of Hitler kneeling in prayer, and La Nona Ora (1999), a wax figure of a fallen Pope being hit by a meteorite. Cattelan is a self-taught artist who worked in design before launching his art career.
