Born Kim Soo-Ja in Daegu, South Korea, in 1957, Kimsooja is an interdisciplinary conceptual and performance artist based in Seoul, Paris, and New York. Her artistic practice infuses site-specific, large-scale installations that use a combination of sound, light, and textile, as well as photography, film, and performance art.
She embraced her artistic name in the early 2000s, an act she honored with a piece of conceptual art called A One-Word Name Is An Anarchist’s Name. This striking muse on identity and its social impact is typical of her performance artwork.
Kimsooja’s work has been the subject of a solo exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (MMCA), Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.
